Resurgence of Chagas Disease Vectors in Yucatan (Mexico) during the hot and dry season

A recent study conducted in collaboration between our researchers from the Unit and our partners reveals a worrying resurgence of Chagas disease vectors during the hot and dry season (March-June) in the southeastern region of Mexico (Yucatan).

The results, published in Acta Tropica, highlight peaks in the abundance of Triatoma dimidiata (the main vector of the disease in this region) in villages and forests, correlated with temperature and inversely correlated with relative humidity. These results emphasize the importance of reinforcing vigilance during this season, especially during forest activities, to limit the spread of this serious disease, which particularly affects Mexico. Approaching World Chagas Day, which takes place on April 14th each year, it is crucial to redouble efforts in the fight against this public health threat. This day provides a valuable opportunity to raise awareness among the public and policymakers about the crucial importance of taking concrete measures to control and prevent the spread of this neglected disease.
