Diagnostic services

Last update: 1 September 2022

INTERTRYP performs diagnostic tests for animal trypanosomoses in the form of services or collaborations.

What kind of diagnostics do we perform?

CATT serological test/Trypanosoma Evansi (CARD Agglutination Test for Trypanosomiasis)

Target parasites species: Trypanosoma evansi

Host target species: camel, cattle, horse, dog

For other animal species: contact us

Cost: EUR 42 excl. VAT per sample + EUR 7 per additional sample

Serological test with indirect ELISA

Target parasites species: Trypanosoma congolense (savannah type); Trypanosoma vivax; Trypanosoma brucei sspp.; Trypanosoma evansi

Host target species: cattle, camel, horse, dog

For other animal species: contact us

Cost of one serological test: 90 euros HT per sample + 15 euros HT per sample and/or additional trypanosome target species.

Molecular test by PCR

Target species of parasites: Trypanosoma congolense (savannah type, kilifi, forest); Trypanosoma vivax ; Trypanosoma brucei sspp.; Trypanosoma evansi; Trypanosoma theileri; Trypanosoma lewisi

Host target species: all

Cost of one molecular test: 90 euros HT per sample + 15 euros HT per sample and/or additional trypanosome target species.

Preparation of trypanosomatidae antigens or DNA

We can prepare antigens from several trypanosome species and send them in lyophilized form to laboratories wishing to perform ELISA testing. Please contact us for more information and quotation.

Diagnostic tests by ELISA + PCR

Cost: EUR 150 excl. VAT per sample + EUR 25 excl. VAT per additional sample and/or target trypanosome species.

How to make a request?

For any request for analysis and before shipping any samples, you must contact us at the following email addresses:

sophie.thevenon@cirad.fr
sophie.ravel@ird.fr

The request for analysis must include the following information:

  • Host species, sex, age, breed if available, animal identifier (name or number)
  • Clinical commemorative signs if any, geographical origin (presence in endemic trypanosomosis area? contact with an infected animal?), data of the clinical examination
  • Postal addresses, e-mail and telephone numbers of the owner and the veterinarian
  • The tubes must be clearly identified (name, collecting date).

Results

The results will be sent to you with an invoice.

The deadline for the results will be discussed between our laboratory and the customer, depending on the urgency of the analysis.

Each result is associated to as status: a sample can thus be declared "positive" or "detected", "negative" or "undetected", or even "inconclusive" according to the used methods, and their criteria for interpreting results. A sample may also be reported as "positive close to the threshold", "negative close to the threshold", "detected at the limit of detection" or "at the limit of detection" if the measurement uncertainty associated with the result overlaps the threshold established for that method.

Unless otherwise specified by the client, samples are retained for one month after the test report is shipped. Thereafter, the samples are either destroyed or banked (unless otherwise specified by the customer).

Which samples send?

For CATT and ELISA, please send us:

  • Either at least 500 µl of serum or plasma, preferably in a screw tube.
  • At least 1 ml of blood taken from a dry tube.
  • Recommended storage before delivery: < -15°c, or failing that, at +4°c less than 6 days.
  • Recommended transport conditions and time: preferably frozen or in ice packs in less than 4 days

For a PCR, please send us:

  • Either at least 500 µl of blood taken on anticoagulant (EDTA or heparin)
  • Either blood on Wathman or FTA cards, or buffy coat.
  • Recommended storage before delivery: at +4°c less than 6 days, or if not, frozen.
  • Recommended transport conditions and time: in ice packs in less than 4 days.

Conditions of admissibility of the samples:

Upon receipt, the laboratory checks the conformity of the samples according to the following criteria:

  • The sample must be associated with a request for analysis.
  • The origin of the sample must be clearly identified.
  • The sample must be consistent with the request (nature, number, transport time, etc.).
  • The sample must be in an appropriate intact tube or vial.
  • The quantity of the sample must be sufficient to perform at least two tests.
  • The quality of the sample must be compatible with the performance of the test (no obvious bacterial or fungal contamination, no odor/appearance of putrefaction, not decomplemented, no severe hemolysis).

In all cases, the responsibility of CIRAD does not begin until the samples are received.

How to send the samples?

The shipment of the samples is done in consultation with the INTERTRYP unit and is at the customer's expense.

The shipment of infectious substances must comply with several national, European and international regulations. These regulations apply to packaging, to the labels affixed to the packaging, and to the accompanying sanitary and customs documents. A tip sheet will be sent to the customer, depending on the nature of the samples and their geographical origin.
